Aglaonema pictum is a MUST have item most aroid enthusiasts wish to have in collections. This rare plant is known only from Sumatra, Indonesia. It is always in high demand because of its exceptionally beautiful foliage, which usually painted in a camouflage patterns of cream, rich green and deep green color patches! Each plant presents its own pattern and can create new ones using both self-pollination and crossing-hybrid.
By nature of the plant, this aglaonema is a terrestrial plant stands to approx. 8-10". When reach mature size, each stem terminates with fragrance , white spadixs that will gradually change into attractive red berries. At same time, the plant produces new growing points at base to form new plants. Generally it is a fairly easy plant when kept warm and provide relatively high humidity. However, to maintain its color and nice shape, it needs correlation of major three factors; substrate, environment and fertilizer;
Substrate As a slow grower, media should be hard enough to sustain for few years usage. Here we choose high quality sphagnum with additional of perlite and small grade pine chips. We also found that it responses well with other non-soil substrates such as pumice rock and Acadama. Traditional potting mix, which add peat as the major ingredient is not recommended as it will be soggy when water from time to time, causing root rot.
Environment It does best in warm (not below 15 Celsius degrees) and relatively high humidity (above 70%) under partial shade. From this, it is best suit for greenhouse and medium to larger sizes terrariums. If grown under artificial light, the suitable light level should be 700-800 lux. Under adequate light and good humidity, leaves are fresh, colorful and rise horizontally. Too much light and/or lower humidity resulted in partial leaf burnt and easily melt. Growing under too dark spot, new growth will not fully develop, with visible low growth rate. When grown as a house plant, the major obstacle is humidity dropping. This can resolved by putting the plant on a dish with wet pebbles or expanded clay and make sure the bottom of the pot not touch the water. Spraying leaves occasionally to rise moisture if the weather is too dry.
Fertilizer In controlled environment i.e. in terrarium, feeding fertilizer should be all year round. It responses well and safe with slow-releasing fertilizer (apply every few months). Using a fertilizer with a balanced formula having relatively equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (the three numbers on the label are approximately the same). As a foliage plant, "Blooming boosting" formulas are not necessary and deprive your plants of needed nitrogen.
Like others, we are fascinated by its delicate painting leaves and have been collecting various forms for 10 years. From hundreds parent plants we have, growing in our pristine enrironment, now our production can be increased to 300 plants/year. Even so, we are definitely sure this volume is still small when compared with current global demand. Our selection includes wide and narrow leaf type, either "Bicolor" and "Tricolor" forms as you will see on the listing below.
We offer well-established plants by artificial propagation, grown in pure, sterilized sphagnum. This allows us to ship them in pot with the growing media to most countries, with minimal disturbance to their health. Please do not compare our prices with wild-collecting plants from their habitat, that cannot control quality and usually melt during transport when roots were destroyed.
